Convert a PNG to AVIF for the smallest file

AVIF produces the smallest files of any widely-used web image format — often dramatically smaller than PNG for the same picture, while still supporting transparency. If you're squeezing every kilobyte out of a site, AVIF is the current state of the art.

Creating AVIF is built into Chromium-based browsers — Chrome, Edge, Brave and Opera — which is where this runs, entirely on your device. In Firefox or Safari, which can open AVIF but can't yet create it, you'll be offered WebP instead, which reaches nearly the same sizes.

What this does — and what it doesn't

  • Creating AVIF needs a Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera). Firefox and Safari can open AVIF but not make it yet, so on those the page suggests WebP.
  • Older software may not open AVIF yet. Use WebP or PNG when broad compatibility matters more than the smallest size.

PNG to AVIF — frequently asked questions

Which browsers can create AVIF?
AVIF encoding is currently available in Chromium-based browsers — Chrome, Edge, Brave and Opera. Firefox and Safari can open AVIF but not create it yet, so on those this page offers WebP instead, which reaches nearly the same file sizes.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API and, for some formats, WebAssembly — the image never leaves your device. You can verify it: load the page, disconnect from the internet, and it still works. There is no upload endpoint to send anything to.
Is it really free?
Yes — no account, no watermark, no daily limit, and no paid step at download. It's free because there's no server doing the work, so it costs us almost nothing to run.
