Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what X% of a number is?
Multiply the number by the percent divided by 100. For example, 15% of 200 is 15 ÷ 100 × 200 = 30. Choose "% of" and enter 15 and 200.
How do I work out what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. 30 out of 200 is 30 ÷ 200 × 100 = 15%. Use "is what %".
How is percentage increase or decrease calculated?
Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. From 100 to 150 is +50%, an increase; from 200 to 100 is −50%, a decrease. The result says which.
What happens if I divide by zero?
A percentage of 0, or a change from 0, isn't defined, so the calculator says so instead of showing 0%, which would read as "no change".
Can it add or take off a percentage, or work backwards?
Yes. Add / subtract gives 200 + 15% = 230 with the amount added. Reverse % finds the original before a rise or a fall: 115 after a 15% rise was 100. Percentage difference compares two values by their gap over their average, and percentage points shows how far one percentage moved, with the relative change.
Does it understand decimal commas?
Yes. 12,5 is read as 12.5, and 1.234,5 and 1,234.5 are both 1234.5. The box says how it read what you typed, and says when a box is empty or isn't a number.
Can I do a whole list at once?
