A JSON formatter that stays out of your way

Free, no sign-up, no credit card, no trial. Your JSON never leaves the browser — paste it and watch it format or minify live, with syntax errors pinpointed to the exact line and column.

Live validation, exact errors

Mistakes are marked as you type, with the exact line and column — including the ones browsers report vaguely, like a trailing comma or an undefined value.

Format, minify, sort, repair

Choose 2 or 4 spaces or tabs, sort keys, escape non-ASCII, unwrap JSON hidden in a string, or repair comments and trailing commas with a clear list of what changed.

Tree, JSONPath and schema

Browse a collapsible tree, copy any path with a click, query with JSONPath, and check the document against a JSON Schema with errors pinned to the right line.

Files, links and JSON Diff

Drop or upload a .json file, download the result, share a document as a link that never touches a server, or send it straight to the JSON Diff tool.

100% private, 100% client-side

Your JSON never leaves your browser. There's no server round trip, ever.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Format and Minify?
Format pretty-prints your JSON so it's easy to read, with 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs — your choice in Options. Minify strips all whitespace to produce the smallest possible payload. Both stay live-synced to whatever you've pasted or typed.
Is my JSON data sent to a server?
No. Every parse, format, query and schema check happens entirely in your browser, in a background thread — nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored anywhere. A share link carries the document inside the address itself (the part after the #), which is never sent to a server.
How big a document can it handle?
You can upload or drop a file of up to 25MB, and pasting has no fixed limit, though very large documents depend on your browser's memory. Work runs off the main thread, so the page stays responsive. Results over 4MB aren't drawn in the editor, but Copy and Download still work, and the tree view is for documents up to 3MB.
Does it fix invalid JSON automatically?
Not unless you ask. Strict validation is the default: it points to the exact line and column of the problem rather than guessing. If you turn on Repair in Options, it will accept comments, trailing commas, single quotes, unquoted keys and Python-style True/False/None, and show you exactly what it changed before you use the result.
How do I search a large JSON document?
Switch to the Tree view. Click any row to copy its path (like $.items[3].id), search keys and values, or type a JSONPath query such as $.items[?(@.price > 10)].name to list every match. Simple jq-style paths like .items[0].id work too.
Can it validate against a JSON Schema?
Yes. Open Schema, paste a draft-07, 2019-09 or 2020-12 schema, and the document is checked as you type. Each problem is listed with its path and marked in the editor at the line and column where it occurs.
Are big numbers and duplicate keys handled safely?
Numbers are never rewritten: a 64-bit id like 1234567890123456789 keeps every digit, where most tools silently round it. If a key appears twice, you're told, since only the last value is kept.
Is the JSON Formatter really free?
Yes. There's no account to create, no card to enter, and no trial clock ticking in the background. Formatting, minifying, repair, the tree, queries, schema checks, and file upload and download are all included.
Is there anything to install or register for?
No. It's a plain web page: no account, no extension, no desktop app, no email capture. Paste JSON and it formats and validates as you type.
