Convert a PNG into an ICO icon

ICO is the format Windows uses for application and shortcut icons, and it's still what many sites use for favicon.ico. An ICO is really a bundle of several images at different sizes, so a program can pick the right one — this converts your PNG and packs the sizes you choose into a single .ico file.

Start from a square PNG at 256×256 or larger for the best result, and select the sizes you need — 16, 32 and 48 pixels cover most favicon and desktop uses.

What this does — and what it doesn't

  • For a sharp icon, start from a square PNG. A non-square image is fitted to a square and may look stretched.
  • If you want a complete favicon set with a web manifest and Apple touch icon as well as the .ico, use the Favicon Generator instead.

PNG to ICO — frequently asked questions

What sizes should an ICO contain?
16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser favicons and Windows desktop use; adding 64, 128 and 256 helps on high-resolution displays. You pick which sizes go into the file.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API and, for some formats, WebAssembly — the image never leaves your device. You can verify it: load the page, disconnect from the internet, and it still works. There is no upload endpoint to send anything to.
Is it really free?
Yes — no account, no watermark, no daily limit, and no paid step at download. It's free because there's no server doing the work, so it costs us almost nothing to run.
