Frequently asked questions

How is the tip calculated?
Multiply the amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. A 18% tip on a $100 bill is $18, making $118. You can work the tip out on the bill before tax (the usual choice) or on the bill after tax.
What's a normal tip percentage?
It varies by country and venue, so treat these as guidance: 15–20% at US sit-down restaurants, 10–12.5% in the UK (often already added as a service charge), 5–10% in much of Europe and India, and no tipping in Japan. The calculator lists these and lets you set any of them with one tap. Tick "service charge included" to be warned before tipping twice.
Do the shares really add up to the total?
Yes. Money is worked out in whole cents, so $100 split three ways is shown as 2 × $33.33 + 1 × $33.34, and the extra cent goes to the first or last person, as you choose. Nobody is left to guess who pays it.
How do I split by what each person ordered?
Open "By what each ordered", enter each person's items before tax, and the tax and tip are shared in proportion to what they ordered. The shares add up to the total exactly.
What does rounding do?
"Round total" rounds the final bill to a step you pick (0.50, 1, 5, 10, 50 or 100), up, down or to the nearest, and the tip absorbs the difference. "Round each share" rounds every person's share instead, which suits cash. Rounding never takes the total below the bill plus tax, and the effective tip percentage is always shown.
Which currencies can I use?
$, €, £, ₹ and ¥. Yen has no cents, so shares are whole yen. Rupees use lakh and crore grouping.
How do I share the result?
"Copy summary" gives a line you can paste into a chat, such as "Dinner: $96.00 total, $24.00 each (4 people, 20% tip)". "Copy link" keeps your numbers in the part of the address after the #, which is never sent to a server.
