Convert an ICO icon to PNG

An ICO file bundles several sizes of the same icon. This pulls out the largest image it contains and gives you a standard PNG — handy when you have a favicon or Windows icon and need an editable, universally-supported image.

Because an ICO can hold multiple resolutions, converting to the largest available gives you the most detail to work with.

What this does — and what it doesn't

  • Only the largest image in the ICO is extracted. If you need a specific smaller size, resize the resulting PNG.
  • Some very old ICO files store their images as raw bitmaps rather than PNG; those are decoded too, but transparency in legacy formats can occasionally be imperfect.

ICO to PNG — frequently asked questions

Which size do I get from a multi-size ICO?
The largest image the file contains, so you have the most detail to work with. Resize the PNG afterwards if you need a smaller version.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API and, for some formats, WebAssembly — the image never leaves your device. You can verify it: load the page, disconnect from the internet, and it still works. There is no upload endpoint to send anything to.
Is it really free?
Yes — no account, no watermark, no daily limit, and no paid step at download. It's free because there's no server doing the work, so it costs us almost nothing to run.
