Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres: BMI = kg ÷ m². For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m is 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) ≈ 22.9. If you enter imperial units, the calculator converts height and weight to metric first and applies the same formula.
What are the WHO BMI categories?
The World Health Organization defines four bands: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. The calculator shows which band your BMI falls into alongside the number itself.
What are the limitations of BMI?
BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes and very muscular people can show a high BMI while carrying little body fat, and it doesn't account for age, sex, or where fat is distributed. It's a quick screening number, not a diagnosis — talk to a doctor or other qualified health professional about what a healthy weight looks like for you.
Can I use metric or imperial units?
Yes. Switch between metric (centimetres and kilograms) and imperial (feet, inches, and pounds) with the toggle above the inputs — the calculator converts internally so the BMI and category are identical either way.
Is my height and weight data stored or uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs locally in your browser and your last inputs are saved only to this browser's local storage for convenience — your health data is never sent to a server.
Is the BMI calculator really free?
Yes — nothing to pay, nothing to register for, no watermark. The only revenue here is one modest ad slot on the page.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There's no account system at all. Open the page and start typing.
