Convert a JPG to AVIF for a smaller file

AVIF typically halves the size of a JPG at the same visual quality, making it a strong choice for photographs on modern sites. Converting your JPGs to AVIF is one of the biggest single wins available for page weight.

Creating AVIF runs in a WebAssembly encoder on your own device, in any current browser. Since the source JPG is already compressed, keep the quality reasonably high so the two lossy passes don't compound.

What this does — and what it doesn't

  • This is a second lossy pass on an already-compressed JPG — keep the quality high to avoid visible artefacts.
  • AVIF encoding takes a few seconds on large pictures. Not every older app can open AVIF yet.

JPG to AVIF — frequently asked questions

How much smaller will the AVIF be?
For typical photographs, often around half the size of the JPG at the same perceived quality. The exact saving depends on the image and the quality setting you choose.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API and, for some formats, WebAssembly — the image never leaves your device. Most conversions keep working with the internet switched off once the page has loaded. A few (HEIC, TIFF, AVIF and PNG to SVG) download a helper file from this site the first time you use them; if you are offline at that moment you are told so, not blamed for a broken file. There is no upload endpoint to send anything to.
Is it really free?
Yes — no account, no watermark, no daily limit, and no paid step at download. It's free because there's no server doing the work, so it costs us almost nothing to run.
