Algorithms to compute

A hash is of bytes, not words: echo "x" | sha256sum hashes "x" plus a newline, so pick "add one" to match it.

Generate and verify hashes

Free, no sign-up, no credit card, no trial. Your file never gets uploaded — type text or drop in files of any size for MD5, SHA-256, SHA-3, BLAKE3 and more, or paste a published checksum or a SHA256SUMS list to verify them.

Fourteen algorithms, plus HMAC

MD5 and SHA-1 through SHA-2, SHA-3, BLAKE2, BLAKE3, CRC32 and xxHash, as hex, Base64 or an SRI integrity value.

Files and checksum lists

Drop files or a folder of any size, check them against a SHA256SUMS list, and export your own list or a CSV.

Instant, live results

Hashes update as you type, with control over line endings, the final newline and the text encoding.

100% private, 100% client-side

Your text and files never leave your browser. There's no server round trip, ever.

Frequently asked questions

Which hash algorithms are supported?
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA3-256, SHA3-512, BLAKE2b, BLAKE2s, BLAKE3, CRC32, xxHash64 and XXH3. Pick any of them under Algorithms; MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 are on to start with. With a secret key the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-2 and SHA-3 results become HMAC values.
Is my text or file uploaded to a server?
No. Every algorithm runs in your browser as WebAssembly that ships with the page, and files are read from your disk a piece at a time in a background thread — nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored anywhere.
How do I verify a file I downloaded matches the original?
Add the file, then paste the published hash into "Compare with a published hash". A bare hash, sha256:…, SHA256 (file) = … and a sha256sum line all work. To check many files at once, paste or open the SHA256SUMS (or md5sum) list and drop the files: each one gets a pass or fail.
Is MD5 or SHA-1 safe to use?
Not for security purposes — both are broken for things like password storage or digital signatures. They're included here because they're still widely used for legacy checksums and file-integrity checks, where collision resistance isn't the concern.
How large a file can I hash?
There's no size limit. Files are read in 8 MB pieces in the background, so a multi-gigabyte ISO is fine: memory stays flat, the page stays responsive, and a progress bar and Cancel button show while it works.
Is the Hash Generator really free?
Completely free. No login, no credit card, no time-limited trial, and no premium tier gating anything. Every algorithm, HMAC and file hashing are included, with no size cap and no daily hash limit.
Why doesn't my hash match the one from echo or another tool?
A hash is of bytes, not words. echo adds a newline, Windows files end lines with CRLF, and UTF-16 stores every character as two bytes. The text options let you add or remove the final newline, choose line endings and pick UTF-8, UTF-16 or Latin-1 so the bytes match.
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. There's no sign-up, no login and no email capture anywhere on the site, and nothing to install. Type text or drop in a file and every hash appears at once.
