Convert a PNG to BMP

Some older programs, embedded devices and school software only read BMP. This writes a standard 24-bit BMP that they all accept.

BMP has no compression, so expect a much larger file than the PNG. Transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, because a plain 24-bit BMP cannot store transparency.

What this does — and what it doesn't

  • The BMP is uncompressed and will be much larger than the PNG.
  • Transparency is flattened onto your chosen background colour.

PNG to BMP — frequently asked questions

Which kind of BMP does this make?
A standard 24-bit BMP with no compression and no transparency, the most widely readable kind.
Can I convert several images at once?
Yes. Drop or choose as many files as you like: they are all converted with the same settings, you see each result's size before downloading, and Download all gives you one ZIP. To shrink files without changing their format, the Image Compressor is the better fit.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API and, for some formats, WebAssembly — the image never leaves your device. Most conversions keep working with the internet switched off once the page has loaded. A few (HEIC, TIFF, AVIF and PNG to SVG) download a helper file from this site the first time you use them; if you are offline at that moment you are told so, not blamed for a broken file. There is no upload endpoint to send anything to.
Is it really free?
Yes — no account, no watermark, no daily limit, and no paid step at download. It's free because there's no server doing the work, so it costs us almost nothing to run.
