Convert a BMP to PNG

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so files are enormous. PNG holds exactly the same pixels but compresses them without loss, typically to a tenth of the size or less.

That makes PNG the safe replacement for old screenshots, scans and Windows bitmaps you want to keep at full quality.

What this does — and what it doesn't

The picture is identical; only the file gets smaller. Nothing is recovered or improved.
Some unusual BMP variants (for example, run-length compressed ones) may not open in your browser; you will get a clear message if so.
