Convert a GIF to PNG

PNG is a better home for a still GIF: it is not limited to 256 colours and it has proper transparency, so edges are smooth instead of jagged. Converting a still GIF to PNG is a quick way to get a cleaner, editable image.

For an animated GIF, this saves the first frame as a still PNG. If you want to keep the movement, use GIF to WebP, which produces a smaller animated file.

What this does — and what it doesn't

  • A GIF holds at most 256 colours, and converting to PNG cannot add back the colours it never had.
  • Only the first frame of an animated GIF is saved. PNG here is a still image.

Can I keep the animation?
Not as a PNG. Use GIF to WebP to get an animated WebP that is usually much smaller than the GIF.
Can I convert several images at once?

Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API and, for some formats, WebAssembly — the image never leaves your device. Most conversions keep working with the internet switched off once the page has loaded. A few (HEIC, TIFF, AVIF and PNG to SVG) download a helper file from this site the first time you use them; if you are offline at that moment you are told so, not blamed for a broken file. There is no upload endpoint to send anything to.
