Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The background removal runs entirely in your browser using an on-device AI model, so your images never leave your device. The AI engine and the models are files on this site, downloaded once on first use and then kept by your browser — no third-party service is contacted.
What kind of images work best?
Pick what is in the picture. “People” uses MODNet, which is tuned for portraits, headshots and full-length photos. “Objects & products” uses a general model (U²-Net) for products, pets, food and most other subjects. If the first result is rough, switch the choice and it re-runs.
Why is the first run slower?
The first time you use a model, it (a few megabytes) downloads to your browser and is kept. After that, removing a background is much faster, and it works offline.
Can I put something behind the subject?
Yes. Keep it transparent, or fill the background with a colour, a blurred copy of your own photo, or another picture. Drag the before/after divider to compare, and use the touch-up brush, the edge cut-off and the feather slider to tidy the edges. Transparent results save as PNG; with a solid background you can also save JPG.
Can I do many pictures at once?
Yes, up to 20 at a time. They are processed one after another with the same settings, and “Download all as ZIP” keeps each original file name.
Is it really free, and can I use the result commercially?
Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no limit, and the cutout is yours to use, including commercially.
Which browsers are supported?
Any modern browser works. The objects model runs on the GPU when your device and browser support WebGPU, and otherwise on the CPU, which is slower but still works. The people model always runs on the CPU.
