Add line breaks and split text into lines

Free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded. Turn a comma-separated line into a list, put every sentence on its own line, or cut text into lines of a fixed number of words or characters.

Live result

The answer updates as you type, with line and character counts before and after.

Chain and undo

Use the result as the next input, step back up to 20 changes, copy, download or share a link.

Careful with text

Windows, Mac and Linux line endings are read (opened files keep theirs), and emoji and accents stay whole.

100% private

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

What can I split on?
Commas, semicolons, spaces, tabs, pipes, the end of a sentence, any text you type, or a fixed number of words or characters per line. Each existing line is split on its own, so an existing list keeps its order.
Does it split sentences correctly?
It breaks after a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis that is followed by a space, and after the CJK marks 。!?. It does not know abbreviations, so “Dr. Smith” is split after “Dr.”; check the result.
Are emoji and accents kept whole when cutting by characters?
Yes. “Characters” counts what you see (a flag, a family emoji or a letter with an accent is one character), so a cut never lands inside one.
Can I keep the delimiter?
Yes. “Keep the delimiter at the end of each piece” leaves the comma or other mark on the line it ended.
What happens to Windows (CRLF) and Mac line endings?
Windows, Mac and Linux breaks are all read as ordinary line breaks. A file you open with “Open file” keeps its style in the result, so a CRLF file stays CRLF. Browsers turn the breaks of text you type or paste into plain LF, so that text gets LF results. If a file mixes styles, the commonest one is used and the tool says so.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser; your text is never sent to a server and is not saved on this device. Only your option choices are remembered. (If you switch to another operation, your text is held in this tab's session storage for up to a minute so it can carry over, then discarded.) It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
