Frequently asked questions

What is a percentage point?
The plain gap between two percentages. From 40% to 50% is 10 percentage points.
How is that different from a percent change?
A percent change is relative to the start. 40% to 50% is a 25% increase, because 10 is a quarter of 40.
Why does the difference matter?
An interest rate going from 4% to 5% rose one percentage point, but it is 25% more expensive. Both are true, and they mean different things.
What if the starting percentage is 0?
The points are still shown, but a relative change from 0 isn't defined, so it is left out.
