Frequently asked questions

How do I find the original value after a percentage increase?
Divide the final value by 1 plus the percentage. If 115 is the result of a 15% rise, the original is 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100.
And after a decrease?
Divide by 1 minus the percentage. If 85 is the result of a 15% fall, the original is 85 ÷ 0.85 = 100.
Why not just take the percentage off the final value?
The percentage was calculated on the original, not on the final value, so 15% of 115 is not the amount that was added.
What if the fall is 100%?
Nothing would be left, so the original can't be found. The calculator says so.
