Frequently asked questions

How does Talking Buddy work?
Press Talk to Buddy and allow the microphone. Buddy perks up its ears and waits. Say something, and when you stop, Buddy says it straight back in a funny high voice, with its mouth moving to the words. Keep talking to keep the conversation going. Press Stop talking to turn the microphone off.
What else can Buddy do?
Tap Buddy anywhere. Pat its head and it sees stars, boop its nose and it sneezes, tickle its tummy (or rub it) and it giggles, tickle its tail and it wags, wiggle an ear, or tap its feet to make it hop. Feed gives it a snack (an apple, a cookie, a carrot or a strawberry), and Dance plays a little tune. Leave Buddy alone for a while and it yawns. Every action also has its own button, so it can be played with a keyboard too.
Can I change Buddy's voice?
No: Buddy always has its own high, cheeky voice, so it sounds like the same friend every time. Your words are turned into Buddy's voice on your device as Buddy plays them back.
How do I make a video?
Press Record a video, play with Buddy, then press Stop (recordings stop by themselves after a minute). You can watch the clip, then save or share it. With “Put my own voice in videos too” ticked, the video has your voice as well as Buddy's. If your browser recorded a WebM, Save as MP4 converts it on your device into a video that plays on phones. There is no watermark.
Does Buddy have friends?
Yes. Pebble the penguin lives in an igloo and has its own page, its own soft, sweet voice and its own tricks: it goes shy, slides on its belly, eats fish and sneezes snowflakes. Find it under “Visit a friend” next to Buddy.
Is my voice uploaded or saved?
No. Buddy listens and plays back inside your browser, and each thing you say is forgotten as soon as Buddy has repeated it. Nothing is sent to a server. Videos are only made when you press Record, and they stay on your device unless you save or share them. The microphone switches off when you leave the tab. Only your choices (background, hearing, whether videos include your voice) are remembered, in this browser.
Buddy doesn't hear me, or repeats noise
Change Hearing under the buttons. Quiet voice helps a soft-spoken child; Noisy room makes Buddy ignore background chatter, TV or a fan, so speak up a little. Buddy waits until you pause before answering, and it doesn't listen while it is talking, so it never repeats itself. If the browser blocked the microphone, allow it for this site in the browser's settings and press Talk to Buddy again.
Is it suitable for young children?
That's who it's for: no reading needed to play, big buttons, no sign-up, no chat with strangers, and nothing to buy. It works on phones, tablets and computers. As with any app that uses the microphone, a grown-up should be the one to allow it.
