Frequently asked questions

How do I use the emoji picker?
Type a word — like happy, cat, pizza or arrow — into the search box, or browse by category. Tap an emoji to copy it, then paste it wherever you like. In Options you can switch a tap to “add it to my message” instead: emoji gather in a message box where you can copy them all at once. Press and hold an emoji (or right-click it, or press Alt+Enter) to see its details and variants.
How do skin tones and gender versions work?
Pick a tone in the row of swatches under the search box and every emoji that has skin-tone versions (hands, people, gestures) shows that tone. Press and hold one for all five tones, plus man, woman and person versions where they exist. Under Options, “People emoji show” can make man, woman or person the default. Only single-tone versions are offered: the mixed-tone couples and handshakes are not.
What can I search for?
Names and keywords (“lol”, “tick”), Slack and GitHub-style shortcodes such as  or :+1:, flags by code or common name (“usa”, “uk”, “uae”), and the official Unicode names of symbols (“rightwards arrow”, “greek small letter alpha”). Under Options you can also search in up to four other languages — German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese or Hindi — so “herz” or “corazón” finds the heart. A language’s names are downloaded from this site only when you switch it on.
Which symbols are included?
About 1,700 text symbols under their official Unicode names: arrows, maths, currency, box drawing, Greek letters, superscripts and subscripts, dingbats, geometric shapes, letterlike signs and fractions, and punctuation. They are plain characters, so they take the colour of the text around them. The “hide emoji this device can’t draw” check applies to emoji only; a symbol your font lacks can still show as a box.
Can I copy a code point, HTML code or shortcode?
Yes. The details panel lists the character, its name, code point (U+1F44D), shortcode, HTML decimal and hex codes, JavaScript and CSS escapes, and the Emoji version it was added in, each with its own copy button. Options also has “Copy without the hidden U+FE0F character”, which leaves out the invisible selector that asks for the picture form — handy for matching text exactly, but a few single emoji (☺, ❤) may then paste as plain text. Combined emoji such as ❤️‍🔥 and keycaps keep it, since removing it would split them apart.
Why do some emoji look different, or go missing?
Emoji are drawn by each device and app using its own font, so the same character looks a little different on iPhone, Android, Windows and each social platform; you are always copying the standard Unicode character. The newest emoji do not exist on older systems, so the picker paints each one on a hidden canvas and, by default, hides those that come out as a box. That check is best-effort and can be wrong either way; you can switch it off in Options.
Does it remember my favourites and most-used emoji?
Yes. Add an emoji to favourites from its details panel; favourites, a recently used row (switchable to most used) and the message you were building are saved in this browser only. Options can export your favourites and counts to a file and import one back, which adds to what you already have. Clearing recent and most used leaves your favourites alone.
Can I use it from the keyboard?
Yes. Press / to jump to the search box; Enter copies (or adds) the first result, which is highlighted as you type, and the down arrow moves into the results. The arrow keys, Home, End and Page Up/Down move around a grid, Enter picks, Shift+Enter does the other action, and Alt+Enter opens the details. Typing a letter while on a grid jumps back to the search box.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The picker, search, favourites and message all run in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere. The links under your message are plain links: Fancy Text Generator opens empty (copy your message and paste it in), and Word & Character Counter receives the message inside the link’s # part, which browsers never send to a server. It is free with no sign-up.
