Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the online metronome?
Very. It uses the Web Audio API's high-precision audio clock to schedule each click slightly ahead of time, so the tempo stays rock-steady and doesn't drift even if your browser is busy — far more reliable than a plain setInterval beep.
Why do I have to press play before I hear anything?
Browsers only allow sound to start after you interact with the page, so the metronome's audio begins the first time you press play or tap. This is a built-in browser rule, not a limitation of the tool.
What do the time signature and subdivision settings do?
Beats per bar sets how many beats are in each measure and which one gets the accented, higher-pitched downbeat — 4 for common time, 3 for a waltz, and so on. Subdivision adds extra clicks within each beat: eighth notes, triplets, or sixteenths, which is great for practising tricky rhythms.
How does tap tempo work?
Tap the Tap button in time with the music and the metronome works out the BPM from the average gap between your taps. Keep tapping to refine it; a long pause resets the count.
Is it free and private?
Completely. The metronome runs entirely in your browser with no sign-up, and your settings are saved only on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
