Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the online metronome?
Each click is booked a fraction of a second ahead on the Web Audio clock, and every beat is placed by adding whole beat lengths, so the tempo does not drift even when the page is busy. If the page freezes for a moment, missed clicks are skipped and the beat grid is kept rather than played back in a burst.
Why do I have to press play before I hear anything?
Browsers only allow sound to start after you interact with the page, so the audio begins the first time you press play. This is a browser rule, not a limit of the tool.
How do I set a time signature like 6/8 or 7/8?
Pick one under Time signature, or choose 1 to 12 beats and tap each dot above the tempo to make that beat an accent, normal or silent. In 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 the beat is the dotted quarter (two, three or four beats with three clicks each), so BPM counts dotted quarters. In 7/8 the beat is the eighth note and each group of 2+2+3 starts with a click. Silent beats mute that whole beat, including its subdivisions.
What are swing, subdivisions and polyrhythm?
Subdivisions add 2 to 6 clicks inside each beat (eighths, triplets, sixteenths, quintuplets, sextuplets). Swing delays the second click of each pair, so it works with eighths, sixteenths and sextuplets; about 67% gives a triplet feel. Polyrhythm adds a second voice with 2 to 12 evenly spaced clicks across the bar, for example 3 against 2 beats.
What does the tempo trainer do?
It starts at the tempo you set and adds a number of BPM every few bars until it reaches your target, then holds. The new tempo starts on the first beat of the bar. Silent bars (gap mode) play some bars and mute others so you can check that your own time stays steady; the beat dots keep moving during the silence. An optional count-in plays one or two bars at the starting tempo first.
How does tap tempo work?
Tap the Tap button, or press T, in time with the music. The tempo is worked out from the gaps between your taps with the odd gap (a missed or doubled tap) ignored, and shown with one decimal. After a pause of about three and a half seconds the count starts again.
Will it keep playing when my phone locks?
The sound is routed through a media element, which most phones keep alive when the screen locks or the tab goes to the background, and the lock screen gets play and pause buttons. This depends on the browser, so test yours before relying on it on stage. The optional screen-awake setting uses the Wake Lock API where your browser has it, and is released when you stop or leave the page.
Can I save presets and share a setup?
Yes. Presets, setlists (up to 8 lists of 50 songs, with previous and next buttons, or [ and ] on the keyboard) and your practice time per day are saved only in this browser. Copy link to this setup puts the tempo, meter, accents, rhythm, trainer and sound in a link whose data stays after the # and is never sent to a server; opening such a link does not overwrite your saved settings until you change something.
Is the screen flash safe?
The optional full-screen flash is off by default, is skipped above 180 BPM so it never flashes more than three times a second, and is disabled if your device asks for reduced motion. It is still flashing light, so leave it off if you are sensitive to it.
Is it free and private?
Completely. It runs in your browser with no sign-up, your settings, presets and practice time stay on your device, and nothing is uploaded. The count-in voice, if you turn it on, is your device's own speech engine.
