How does the online tuner work?
It listens through your microphone and finds the pitch with a McLeod-style autocorrelation detector, which also measures how clearly pitched the sound is. If the sound is noise, too quiet or unclear, it shows nothing rather than a guess. Otherwise it shows the nearest note (or the target string) and how many cents sharp or flat you are.
What instruments and tunings are included?
Chromatic (any note), guitar in standard, Drop D, DADGAD and Open G, 4- and 5-string bass (down to low B), ukulele (standard and low G), violin, viola, cello and double bass, mandolin, 5-string banjo in open G, and a voice mode with a pitch graph. Pick a string button to tune to that string, or leave it on Auto and the tuner finds the nearest string from the sound.
Does it work for bass?
Yes. The tuner uses a longer stretch of sound for low notes, enough for a 5-string bass's low B at about 31 Hz, and does the analysis in a background worker so the page stays smooth. Very quiet low strings can still be hard to hear for a laptop microphone, so play close to it.
What do the strobe, the graph and the lock do?
The strobe view shows stripes that drift right when you are sharp and left when you are flat and stand still when you are in tune, which makes small errors easy to see (it is replaced by the needle if your device asks for reduced motion). The pitch graph draws the last ten seconds of pitch, useful for singing. When a note stays within about 4 cents for a little over half a second it shows Locked, with an optional chime or vibration if you turn them on (vibration works only on devices that support it).
Can I hear the note to tune by ear?
Yes. Press the Hear button to play the selected string (or the note you last played) as a steady tone, and match your instrument to it. While the tone plays the microphone display pauses, so the speaker is not mistaken for your instrument.
What are capo, transpose and note names?
A capo raises every string target by the number of frets you set. Transpose only changes the note names shown, for instruments written in another key such as B-flat or E-flat; it does not change the pitch heard. Note names can be shown with sharps, flats, Do-Re-Mi or German style (H and B).
What is A4 = 440 and can I change it?
A4 is the reference pitch the whole scale is tuned from; 440 Hz is the modern standard. You can set it anywhere from 400 to 480 Hz, for example 415 for baroque or 432 and 442 for some ensembles, and every note and string target follows.
Why does it need microphone access, and is it private?
The tuner has to hear your instrument. It asks for permission only when you press Start, analyses the sound in your browser and never records or uploads it, and turns the microphone off when you press Stop or leave the page. Your settings (reference pitch, instrument, tuning, note names, display and so on) are remembered only in this browser.
