- What is a flow state, and why this game?
- Flow is the absorbed, time-disappears state described by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It tends to happen when a task has a clear goal, gives instant feedback, and is challenging enough to stretch you without overwhelming you. Falling-block puzzles have the first two built in. Flow Blocks adds the third: instead of fixed levels, the speed keeps adjusting so the challenge stays matched to you.
- How does the adaptive speed work?
- After every piece you place, the game looks at how high your stack is. Below a quarter of the board, it's too easy, so the pace climbs quickly. Between a quarter and half full (the shaded band) you're in the target zone, and the pace still creeps up slowly so you keep improving. Above the halfway line it's too hard, so the pace eases off — more the higher the stack. The label above the board shows which of the three is happening.
- Is there evidence that adaptive difficulty helps flow?
- Yes, for the game itself. In a 2008 study by Keller and Bless, people played Tetris set too easy, too hard, or with difficulty that adjusted to their skill; the adaptive version produced the most flow. That's the idea Flow Blocks is built on. Whether a session carries focus over into your work afterwards is much less well established — some people use a few minutes as a warm-up ritual before deep work, but treat that as something to try, not a proven effect.
- What's the difference between Zen and Classic?
- In Zen mode the game never ends: if the stack reaches the top, the board clears, the pace eases off, and you carry on. Stop whenever you like with End session. Classic ends when the stack reaches the top, like a traditional game. Records are kept separately for each mode.
- What are the controls?
- On a keyboard: left and right arrows move, up arrow (or X) rotates clockwise and Z rotates the other way, down arrow soft-drops, Space hard-drops, and P or Esc pauses. Hold left, right or down to repeat. On a phone: drag sideways to move, tap to rotate, drag down to soft-drop, or flick down to drop — or use the buttons under the board. The game pauses itself if you switch tabs or lock your screen.
- Can I play it with focus music?
- Flow Blocks has its own soft, slow background music, which you can turn off with the music button. If you prefer, open Focus Music or the Noise Generator in another tab instead — they keep playing in the background.
- Is my score saved, and is it free?
- Your best score, lines and peak level are stored only in your own browser, per mode. There's no account and no leaderboard, nothing is uploaded, and the game is free with no sign-up.
