Frequently asked questions

How do you play Snake?
Steer the snake around the board and eat the apples. Each apple makes the snake one segment longer and adds to your score. The game ends if the snake's head hits a wall (in Walls mode) or runs into its own body, so the longer you get, the trickier it becomes to avoid yourself.
What are the controls?
On a computer, use the arrow keys or WASD to change direction and the space bar to pause or resume. On a phone or tablet, swipe on the board in the direction you want to go, or use the on-screen D-pad below it. You can't turn a full 180° in one move — that would fold the snake straight back on itself.
What's the difference between Walls and Wrap-around?
In Walls mode (the classic rules), touching any edge ends the game. In Wrap-around mode, the snake passes through an edge and reappears on the opposite side, so only running into yourself is fatal. Switching modes starts a fresh game.
Does the snake speed up?
Yes. Each apple you eat nudges the pace up a little, so the game gets faster as your snake grows. You can also pick a starting speed — Chill, Classic, or Fast — before or during a game; the speed setting applies right away.
Is my high score saved?
Your best score is stored locally in your own browser, so it's there next time you visit on the same device. It never leaves your machine — there's no account and no server-side leaderboard.
Is it really free, and does it work offline?
It's completely free with no sign-up, no ads to click through, and nothing to install. The whole game runs in your browser using plain JavaScript and a canvas, so once the page has loaded it keeps working even with a flaky connection.
