Frequently asked questions

How do you play Snake?
Steer the snake around the board and eat the apples. Each apple makes the snake one segment longer and adds 10 to your score. The run ends if the head hits a wall or a maze block, or runs into the snake's own body, so the longer you get, the trickier it becomes to avoid yourself.
What are the controls?
On a computer, use the arrow keys or WASD to change direction and the space bar to pause or resume. On a phone or tablet, swipe on the board in the direction you want to go, or use the on-screen D-pad below it. The game remembers your last two quick turns, but you can't turn a full 180° in one move because that would fold the snake straight back on itself.
What game modes are there?
Classic is the original. Maze puts fixed walls on the board. Portals adds two pairs of glowing rings: enter one and you come out of its twin, still heading the same way. Zen has no death: the edges wrap and biting yourself only trims your tail, and you press Finish when you are done. Time attack gives you 60 seconds to score as much as you can. Each mode keeps its own best.
What do the bonus items do?
After some apples a bonus item appears and fades away after a few seconds; the ring around it shows how long is left. A gold circle is worth 50 points and adds a segment. A blue diamond slows the game down for a few seconds. A purple triangle shortens your tail by up to three segments. The slow and shrink items are rarer than gold.
What's the difference between Walls and Wrap-around?
With Walls (the classic rules), touching any edge ends the run. With Wrap-around the snake passes through an edge and reappears on the opposite side, so only obstacles and your own body are fatal. Zen always wraps. Changing it starts a fresh game.
How do board size and speed work?
Pick a small (13 by 13), medium (19 by 19) or large (27 by 27) board and a speed from 1 to 10. Each apple you eat speeds the game up a little more. Every combination of mode, board size, edge rule and starting speed keeps its own best score, so a high score on a slow small board does not hide your best on a fast large one. Changing any of them starts a fresh game.
What is the daily challenge?
Once a day, everyone gets the same setup (classic rules, medium board, medium speed) and the same sequence of apple positions, so friends can compare scores fairly. Which day it is comes from your own device's calendar when you start the run. Your best score for each day is kept separately and does not touch your normal bests. Because the apples are placed on the same sequence of candidate squares, an apple can only differ between players where your snake happened to be sitting on a square.
What happens when I switch to another tab or window?
The game pauses by itself and stops the music. When you come back and press Resume, a 3, 2, 1 countdown gives you a moment to get your fingers ready before the snake moves again.
Can I replay a run or save it as a GIF or video?
Yes. After a run, press Replay to watch it again on the board, or save it as a GIF or, in browsers that can record video, as a WebM or MP4 video. There is no watermark. The replay is rebuilt from the turns you made, so nothing is uploaded; the last run is kept in your browser so you can come back to it. Very long runs are thinned out in the GIF so the file stays a sensible size, and a video of a run longer than a minute is sped up.
Does the snake glide or jump from cell to cell?
By default it glides smoothly between cells. If your device asks for reduced motion the snake moves cell by cell instead, and you can also turn smooth movement off yourself.
Is my high score saved?
Your best scores, your daily scores and your last run are stored locally in your own browser, so they're there next time you visit on the same device. They never leave your machine: there's no account and no server-side leaderboard.
Is it really free, and does it work offline?
It's completely free with no sign-up, no ads to click through, and nothing to install. The whole game runs in your browser using plain JavaScript and a canvas, so once the page has loaded it keeps working even with a flaky connection.
