Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?
Words per minute uses the standard convention that one word equals five characters. Net WPM (the headline number) counts only the characters you typed correctly, divided by five, over your elapsed time; raw WPM counts every character you entered. Timing is measured from your first keystroke with real timestamps, so pausing doesn't help your score.
What's a good typing speed?
Most people type around 35–45 WPM. Around 60 WPM is comfortably above average, and professional typists often reach 80–100+ WPM. Accuracy matters as much as speed — it's better to type at 50 WPM with 98% accuracy than 70 WPM with lots of mistakes, because errors slow down real work.
Does the test count mistakes?
Yes. Each character turns green when correct and red when wrong as you type, and your accuracy percentage updates live. Extra characters typed past the end of the passage count as errors too, so accuracy reflects everything you entered.
Can I practise for longer or shorter?
Pick 15, 30, or 60 seconds for a timed run, or choose Passage mode to type a full paragraph at your own pace and see your speed over the whole thing. Your best WPM is saved in your browser so you can track improvement.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
