Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?
Words per minute uses the standard convention that one word equals five characters. Net WPM (the headline number) counts only the characters that are correct in the text you finished, divided by five, over the time. Raw WPM counts every key you pressed. Timing runs from your first keystroke, and the live speed stays blank for the first two seconds because a few characters in a fraction of a second would give a silly number.
What's a good typing speed?
Most people type around 35–45 WPM. Around 60 WPM is comfortably above average, and professional typists often reach 80–100+ WPM. Accuracy matters as much as speed: 50 WPM at 98% beats 70 WPM with lots of mistakes, because errors slow down real work.
How is accuracy measured?
Two ways, both shown. Accuracy counts every key you pressed, so a slip you fixed with Backspace still counts against you. Accuracy of the final text counts only what is left on the screen. Extra characters typed past the end count as errors.
Will a timed test run out of text?
No. In 15, 30, 60 and 120 second tests the text keeps coming and scrolls as you type, so a fast typist is never held back. "Finish" mode ends when you reach the end of 25 words, one quote, one code snippet or your own text.
What can I type?
Common words (with optional punctuation and numbers), quotes, short code snippets, or your own text, which can be in any language your keyboard types (curly quotes and long dashes are made plain so they can be typed). Each setup keeps its own best and history.
Can I see which keys slow me down?
Yes. After a test you get a speed chart for every second, a keyboard heat map of the keys you missed and the slow ones, and a button that builds a practice text around those letters. Practice runs are not recorded.
Can I challenge a friend?
Yes. After a test, copy the challenge link: it opens the same text (generated from a seed in the link, so it works for words, quotes and code, not your own text) and shows your speed to beat. Nothing is uploaded; the link carries only the seed and settings after the #.
Is it accessible?
The text to type is available to screen readers, results are announced and focus moves to the Again button, Esc restarts, and you can switch to larger text, a sans-serif font, wider spacing, hide the live speed or have the result spoken. On a phone the text stays in view above the keyboard.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser: the text, your keystrokes, your history and best scores stay on your device. It's free with no sign-up. Pasting, dropping text and word suggestions are switched off so scores stay honest.
