Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the noise colours?
They differ in how energy is spread across pitch. White is flat and bright, like TV static. Pink falls 3 dB per octave: softer and balanced. Brown falls 6 dB per octave: a deep rumble. Blue rises 3 dB per octave and violet 6 dB, so they are thin and hissy. Grey is shaped to the ear's loudness curve so every pitch sounds about equally loud. Rain, ocean and fan are shaped noise with slow movement added.
Is the noise a recording? Does it loop?
It is not a recording; it is generated live on your device. In browsers that support AudioWorklet (current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari) it is made continuously by a generator on the audio thread, so it never repeats and has no seam. The line under the sound says which one is running. If your browser can't run it, the tool falls back to a 20 second stretch that is blended into its own start so the restart has no click or dip, and it says so on the page.
Can I use it to sleep?
Yes. Pick a timer (15, 30, 60 minutes or any length up to 12 hours) and choose how long the final fade lasts, from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. The fade is booked on the audio clock, so it follows the schedule even if your phone freezes the page's own timers, and you can change the timer or the fade length while it plays. Fade-in on start is optional.
Can I layer sounds?
Yes, up to four at once, each with its own balance and movement (ocean swells, rain gusts, fan wobble). The balance sliders set how loud each sound is next to the others; the main volume sets how loud the whole mix is, so adding a layer doesn't suddenly get louder. Tilt, low-cut, high-cut and stereo width shape the whole mix.
Can I save a mix or share it?
Saved mixes (up to 12) and your last mix and settings are kept in this browser only. "Copy link" puts the mix inside the link after the # sign, which is never sent to a server; whoever opens it hears the same mix with their own volume. A link you open is not saved over your own mix until you change something.
Can I download it?
Yes: pick 1 to 6 minutes and the tool makes a 16-bit stereo WAV on your device, faster than real time, using the same generator and graph as the live sound and the volume you have set. If your browser can't run the endless generator the file is made from the 20 second loop and the page says so.
Will it keep playing if I lock my phone?
In most browsers, yes. The sound plays through your device's media player, so it keeps going with the screen locked and play/pause controls appear on your lock screen. A few older mobile browsers still pause web audio when the screen locks. Space also plays or pauses on a computer.
Is it loud or safe for my speakers?
Every sound is levelled to the same loudness, the volume slider moves evenly in decibels, and a limiter stops the output from clipping even with four layers and the tone sliders pushed. Start low anyway: steady noise at a high level over many hours can tire your ears.
Is it free and private?
Completely. It runs in your browser with no sign-up and nothing uploaded. The generator code is a small file served from this site.
