Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded to a server?
No. Recording, saving, editing and converting all happen on your device. Takes you keep are stored in this browser (IndexedDB) and never sent anywhere. There's no account.
Where are my takes kept, and for how long?
In this browser on this device, until you delete them. Each take has a name and date you can change. Clearing site data, using a private window, or the browser freeing space on a nearly full device can remove them, so download anything you can't lose. A size limit you choose (100 MB to 1 GB) stops the library growing without end, and the page shows how much you use.
What if the page crashes or I close it mid-recording?
While you record, the audio is saved in one-second pieces to the browser's storage. If the tab crashes or you leave, the next visit offers to recover the recording, losing at most the last moment. If the browser doesn't allow storage (some private windows), the page says so and the recording lives in memory only.
What do the level meter and the clipping warning mean?
The bar shows the loudness of the signal in dB, where 0 is the loudest a file can hold, with a marker that holds the recent peak. Clipping means the sound hit that top, which sounds harsh and can't be repaired afterwards. Move back or lower the microphone volume. The meter shows the signal after any echo cancellation or auto gain the browser applies.
Can I choose the microphone and turn off the noise filters?
Yes. Pick a microphone, switch echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain on or off (off is better for music), and ask for mono or stereo and a sample rate. These are requests; the browser and the microphone decide, and the page shows what you actually got after you start.
What can I do before saving?
Cut to part of the recording on a waveform, trim silence at the start and end, level the volume to a loudness target (an approximate, BS.1770-style measurement), even out loud and quiet parts, and mix to mono. Then export as MP3 (64 to 320 kbps), WAV (16 or 24-bit), and, where your browser can write them, Opus or M4A. You can also download the original recording untouched.
Can it record with the screen locked?
Only partly, and it depends on the phone and browser. The page keeps the screen awake (Screen Wake Lock) and plays a silent stream so the browser treats the tab as active, but a lock you trigger yourself, or a system that mutes the microphone in the background, can still stop capture. If the microphone is muted or taken away, the page tells you where the gap is. On iPhone, keep the screen on for important recordings.
Which keyboard shortcuts are there?
Click the recorder, then Space starts, pauses and resumes; Enter or Esc stops. They are ignored while you type in a field or use a slider, and you can switch them off in Input settings.
How long can I record?
Recording is limited by free storage, not a timer. Converting needs the whole recording in memory, about 11 MB a minute of mono audio at 48 kHz, so very long takes (roughly over 100 minutes of mono, half that in stereo) can't be converted to MP3 or WAV here; the original file download always works.
