Is my audio file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is decoded, edited and encoded entirely in your browser — it never leaves your device, and you only get a file when you press Save. There's no account and no upload.

Which files can I open, and what can I save?

You can open MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC (anything your browser can decode), and video files such as MP4, MOV and WebM, whose sound track is used. You can save MP3 (64–320 kbps), WAV (16 or 24-bit), and M4A or iPhone ringtones (M4R) where your browser can write AAC. If a file's codec can't be read, the page says so instead of failing silently.

Does cutting lower the quality?

Not for an MP3 or M4A when the format is 'Same as the file' and you don't use fades, volume changes, mono or a new sample rate: the compressed audio is copied without re-encoding. That kind of cut can only start and end on a frame boundary (about 26 ms for MP3), so the page shows the exact start and end it used. If a lossless cut isn't possible it re-encodes and tells you. Everything else keeps the file's own sample rate unless you pick another, and WAV is lossless.

Can I make an iPhone ringtone?

If your browser can encode AAC audio, tick 'iPhone ringtone' to save an .m4r file (iPhone ringtones can be at most 40 seconds). Some browsers can't write AAC; the page tells you when that is the case, and you can save an MP3 and import it with GarageBand instead. Android phones take the MP3 directly.

How do I cut precisely?

Drag the handles on the waveform, zoom in (buttons, or Ctrl/Cmd and scroll), type a time such as 1:15.250, or nudge by 1 s down to 1 ms. 'Snap to quiet spots' pulls an edge to the nearest silent point, 'Play around start/end' lets you hear the join, and the preview loops and updates while you move the edges. With the waveform focused: Space plays, I and O set the start and end, L loops, S adds a split.

What else can it do?

Delete the middle of a clip, split one clip into several saved together in a ZIP, add fade-ins and fade-outs with a choice of shape, change the volume or normalise loudness (an approximate loudness measure), trim silence from the ends, and show the left and right channels separately.

How long a file can I open?

The whole file is decoded in memory so the waveform and cuts are exact, so very long files (an hour or more) can be slow or fail on phones. Saving runs in the background with a progress bar and a Cancel button, so the page stays usable.
