How do you play 2048?
Use your arrow keys, the WASD keys, or swipe on a touch screen to slide every tile in one direction. When two tiles showing the same number touch, they merge into a single tile of double the value. A new 2 or 4 tile appears after each move. Keep merging to build ever-bigger numbers and reach the 2048 tile.
How do you win 2048?
You win the moment you create a tile with the number 2048. When that happens you can stop, or choose “Keep going” to chase a higher score — many players push on to 4096, 8192 and beyond. The game ends only when the board is full and no adjacent tiles can be merged.
Is there a strategy to reach 2048?
Yes. The most reliable approach is to pick one corner and keep your largest tile pinned there — many players anchor the bottom-right. Build your numbers in a descending row or column toward that corner, favour two directions (say, down and right) and avoid the opposite one, and only make a move you would rather not when you have no better option. Keeping the board tidy leaves room to manoeuvre.
Is this 2048 game free, and does it work offline?
It's completely free with no sign-up, no accounts, and no watermarks. The whole game runs in your browser with no server, so once the page has loaded it keeps working even if you go offline, and nothing you do is uploaded.
Is my score saved?
Your best score and your current game are saved locally in your browser, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off. That data never leaves your device — there are no online leaderboards phoning home.
Who created 2048?
2048 was made in 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli, who released it as free, open-source software. It was inspired by earlier sliding-number games, and its simple merge mechanic has since been rebuilt countless times. This is our own from-scratch version, built to run privately in your browser and match the rest of the tools here.
