An online notepad that keeps your notes in your own browser

Free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded. Write as many notes as you like and they save as you type. Pin the important ones, search them all, keep checklists, preview Markdown, and export or back up whenever you want. Because the notes live only in this browser, clearing site data deletes them: export a backup now and then.

Saves as you type

Many notes in your browser's own database, with a Saved label that is only shown once the write is confirmed.

Checklists and search

Tick items with Ctrl+Enter, find inside a note, and search every note by title and text.

Export and backup

Download a note as .txt or .md, everything as a ZIP, or a JSON backup you can import again.

Private by design

No account and no upload. The trade-off is that clearing site data deletes your notes, so back up.

Frequently asked questions

Where are my notes stored?
In your browser, on this device, in a database called IndexedDB that your browser keeps for this site. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. That also means other browsers and other devices cannot see your notes.
What deletes my notes?
Clearing site data or cookies for this site, uninstalling or resetting the browser, some privacy tools that wipe storage on exit, and private or incognito windows (which discard everything when closed). Browsers can also remove site data when the device is very short of space. Use Export, then Backup (JSON), regularly and keep the file somewhere safe.
How do I know a note is saved?
The label at the bottom right says Saved only after the browser has confirmed the write. While you type it reads Unsaved changes, then Saving, then Saved. If the browser refuses the write (no space left, or storage blocked) it says Not saved and shows why, and it keeps retrying. If you close the tab while changes are waiting, the browser asks you to confirm.
Can I use it in two tabs at once?
Yes. Changes made in one tab appear in the other. If you edit the same note in both at the same time, your text stays and the other tab's version is kept as a separate note marked (other tab), so nothing is lost.
How big can notes be?
A note holds up to 1,000,000 characters, you can keep up to 500 notes, and all notes together are limited to 10,000,000 characters. The browser may allow less on a nearly full device; the storage line under the list shows an estimate.
What does Preview do?
It draws your note with basic Markdown: headings, lists, bold, italic, code, quotes, links and clickable checklists. It is a small reader written for this page, not a full Markdown engine, and it never runs HTML: anything that looks like a tag is shown as plain text. Only http, https and mailto links are made clickable. Your text is never changed by it.
How do checklists work?
Start a line with - [ ] and press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on Mac) on any line to tick or untick it, or turn a plain line into a checklist item. Enter at the end of an item starts the next one. In Preview, click the boxes. The bottom bar shows how many are done.
Which keyboard shortcuts are there?
Alt+N makes a new note, Ctrl+S (Cmd+S) saves and downloads the current note as .txt, Ctrl+F (Cmd+F) finds inside the note while you are in it, F3 goes to the next match. Many browsers keep Ctrl+N for a new window and do not let pages use it, so Alt+N is the dependable one. The Tab key moves focus unless you turn on Tab types a tab in Options.
How do I move my notes to another device?
Export, Backup (JSON) on the old device, then Export, Import on the new one. Import never overwrites: a note that differs from one already there comes in as a copy. You can also download everything as a ZIP of text files, or import plain .txt and .md files as new notes.
Is it free, and is anything sent anywhere?
It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you write is uploaded or tracked. The one thing to remember is that the only copy is the one in your browser.
