How does the food scanner work?
Point your phone's camera at the barcode on a packaged food. The barcode is read on your device, then its number is looked up in the free Open Food Facts database, which returns the product's Nutri-Score, nutrition values, ingredients and additives. The tool turns that into a colour grade, a sugar/fat/salt breakdown, and plain-language call-outs. No barcode, or a product that isn't in the database? Read the nutrition label with your camera instead, or type the barcode number in by hand.
How does reading the nutrition label work?
When a product has no barcode entry, take a photo of its nutrition panel. The text is recognised entirely on your device — nothing is uploaded — and the numbers are parsed into a form you confirm or correct before grading. OCR on real packaging isn't perfect, so treat it as a fast starting point rather than the final word: it then computes the same Nutri-Score and traffic lights from the values you approve.
What do the colour grades (A to E) mean?
That's the Nutri-Score — a front-of-pack system used across Europe. It rolls a food's nutrition into one letter from A (dark green, a better choice) to E (red, best occasional). It rewards protein, fibre and fruit/veg content and penalises calories, sugar, saturated fat and salt. A high-sugar or very salty product lands at a red D or E.
What are the sugar, fat and salt “traffic lights”?
They're the UK front-of-pack labels: each of fat, saturates, sugars and salt is shown green (low), amber (medium) or red (high) per 100 g, so you can see exactly which nutrient is driving the grade — the thing a single letter can't tell you.
Does it work for Indian and other regional products?
The barcode itself always scans. Whether the product is found depends on Open Food Facts' coverage: large national brands are usually there, but many regional and local products aren't yet, or have incomplete data. When a product isn't found you'll be told — and you can read its nutrition label with your camera instead, so those products still get a grade.
Is anything uploaded or tracked?
Reading the barcode happens entirely on your device. When you look up a product, only the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts to fetch its data — never a photo, never anything personal, and there's no account. You can skip the lookup and type a barcode number instead.
What is the NOVA group and why do additives matter?
NOVA classifies how processed a food is, from 1 (unprocessed) to 4 (ultra-processed). The additive count lists the E-numbers in the product — approved substances whose main signal here is the degree of processing, not automatic harm. Both are shown so you can judge for yourself.
Which phones and browsers are supported?
Any modern browser with a camera, over HTTPS (this site is). Barcode scanning uses your browser's built-in detector where available (Chrome and Android) and falls back to an on-device decoder elsewhere (iPhone Safari, Firefox). Manual barcode entry works everywhere.
Is this medical or dietary advice?
No. The grade and breakdown are general, informational estimates from crowd-sourced data. Always check the actual packaging for allergens, and talk to a doctor or registered dietitian before making significant dietary changes.
